Reflection After Independence Day

After watching a spectacular fireworks show last night, I began to wonder about my "independence"; the independence from my family. After two weeks, I felt like I have become a mature and grown man. Before, I was a "child" being ignorant, immature, and irresponsible. Things have changed. After having experienced Brown, I feel more and more independent: waking up every day by myself, doing my laundry, budgeting my money, etc. I almost feel like an adult in a sense.

Being independent may be hard sometimes. When you're off in the world, you start a fresh new life. You have few friends and have nothing to start upon. It's hard to wake up every day to find something to reach out for. Goals have to be set to give you motivation. Otherwise, you'll be unsuccessful. Also, having few connections means that you have to go the extra mile to converse and to learn more about people. That's what I'm experiencing here at Brown. I convince myself that there's always something out there to reach for and I just have to keep on pushing myself. I'm lucky to have the ILC group behind me but when it comes time for me to go to college, I'll feel the loneliness that associates with a freshman in college until I get "friends".

Being independent is also beneficial in some ways. I get to make my own decisions on what to do, what to buy, where to go...I also don't have to rely on anyone but myself. It just gives you a sense of maturity and "hey", you're an adult now and you are respected. My goal right now is to get to college to learn more about the world and to help myself and other people in the future. I look towards making a change in the world in some way. I'm still trying to achieve it.
