Captain Jack Harkness
There were definitely a few parts of today I could have lived without. The running across campus sweating into my adorable dress, the frantic updates and desperately trying to find a place to watch the World Cup, the heat of my new dorm before I plugged the fan in…
But the good things about today heavily outweigh the bad.
We had a lovely brunch (I say lovely lightly—the food was delicious) and we met some amazing Brown (and Wellesley!) alumni. The Brown Session 1 students talked with us for hours about Brown and what to expect (anything they had left out the night before).
After the slow, comfortable pace of the brunch, the rushed tours and orientations were a little disconcerting. And while I would love to go in depth on my first day, classes start tomorrow, and I am exhausted.
My dorm is great, my roommate is the biggest sweetheart and I get along with her immensely well. The RA is fantastic, and did I mention I’m staying in Harkness House?
The first thing I thought when I heard that was “Captain Jack Harkness,” the main character in my favorite British science fiction television show. And lo and behold, as I looked at the place I would be staying for the next two weeks, I saw that somebody had actually written “Captain Jack” in front of the Harkness, and drew a TARDIS (the time traveling device he uses with the Doctor to get around). The science fiction nerd inside of me died and went to heaven.
I got to know a couple of my floor-mates pretty well today, and I can happily say that I know I’ll be having an amazing time these next two weeks with these girls.
I’m a little anxious for classes tomorrow, but I’m sure I’ll have a great time.

Mariana,
ReplyDeleteWhen I first read the title to your blog in the blog log it scared the bejeesus out of me.
Knowing you as I now do, I was worried that this was someone you met today and that you had jumped him and had your way with him. Or, at the very least, made a date for a late night rendezvous with him.
When you get the chance, you'll have to tell us something about your roomie. A nice photo of you and her would be nice, too.
I can understand that whole exhaustion thing you wrote about but we still need to read all of the details about your day today. It sounds very exciting and we don't want you to deprive us of our own excitement.
Thank goodness this was just THE Captain Jack Harkness and not a real life flesh and blood person we'd have t explain away later.
