A Very Exciting Day!
Today was the very anticipated day! It was finally time to check into Brown University. So we all met down in the lobby at 8:30 AM where Ms. Kronenberg was waiting for us. She then took Lydia, Selene, and I first to the college. After everyone was on the campus, we went to go get in line to check in. The line was not that long and everything went by smoothly. I received my key and my Brown University ID.
As soon as we got our key we all came to Harkness House. We all have the same building and it is filled with other girls on the 1st, 3rd, and 4th floor that are also taking Leadership courses.
Last night I was actually a bit nervous about having a roommate because I didn't know what she was going to be like. Once I saw that my name was the only one on my door I realized that I had received a single. I was a little sad because I wanted to experience having a roommate. However, I don't think having a single is bad and besides, Guadalupe is just 5 doors down. My RA, Christine, is right in front of my room. I think that is pretty good. She was really friendly when she first saw me come to open my room.
After we had finished looking at our rooms, we headed off to the brunch with the Brown Alumnae. The wife of Mr. Sanchez also came to the brunch. She graduated from Wellesley College so it was a great opportunity to ask her more about the college. The food there was good and I had a great time talking with Lizet who is a current student at Brown. She gave me her personal experience and really encouraged me to think about Brown University when applying to colleges. Furthermore, after we finished eating, it was time for Selene to give her speech. She did really well and proved that the WCCUSD is much more than the negativity portrayed in the media.
Once the brunch was over, we realized that we still needed to get fans and sheets. Unfortunately, Brown University had already ran out of both fans and sheets to rent. Mr. Sanchez offered to take us to Home Depot to buy them. Joey Perez who is a Brown alumnae, Selene and I all went in Mr. Sanchez's car. We dropped off Joey Perez at his house and then we headed off to Home Depot.
Unfortunately, the fans were all sold out in Home Depot so we decided to go to Target. We managed to get all the fans from there, but had to go to Walmart to get the sheets because Target didn't have enough of the Twin XL. The ride with Mr. Sanchez really helped me get a look at Rhode Island and learn about some of the history here. We had good conversations with Mr. Sanchez. I am really grateful that he took time out of his busy schedule to help us. He was really friendly. I enjoyed spending time with him and getting to know him a little better.
After we finished buying everything, we returned to Brown University. Since my luggage was still in the hotel, Ms. Kronenberg took Selene, Irene, and I back to the hotel to get our belongings. Our orientation was at 4:30 PM and we managed to get there on time. Two of the girls from my floor took us to the orientation.
I talked with as many girls from my floor as much as I could and found out that there are some coming from Mexico, Thailand, Panama, Chicago, Illinois, New Orleans, and many other places. Everyone was really friendly with one another. I really liked that and I hope it continues. I plan to make some new friends while I'm here.
Brown University actually had an Ice Cream Social after we had dinner which I thought was really nice and welcoming. I really like the college environment here. Everyone was smiling and enjoying themselves.
Overall, my first day at Brown University was amazing. I simply can not wait until class starts tomorrow. I am eager to know what it will be like.

Lucero,
ReplyDeleteI bet that an enterprising person could make a killing by renting bedding and fans to the summer students. It seems that running out of such things can be a real problem if you're one of those doing without.
Just as you are, I'm disappointed that you didn't get a roomie. That's what can make a trip like this so much more enjoyable. That is, of course, as long as you don't end up with the roommate from Hell like William did. I'm just tickled to death that it didn't escalate to the point where William took him for a one way walk into the woods.
The adventure is real, Lucero, and you're right in the middle of it, now. One things is for sure and for certain, you're not in Richmond any more.
