We are a group of ten juniors and two sophomores who are lucky to have been accepted to be members of the Ivy League Connection (ILC). The ILC gives West Contra Costa Unified School District students the opportunity to attend summer enrichment programs at Ivy League universities.
Through the ILC, the students in our group will be taking courses on either Women and Leadership, International Financial Markets and Investments, or Techniques in DNA-Based Biotechnology at Brown University in the summer of 2010.
Our participation in this program will help prepare us for the rigors of life at selective universities while making us better leaders on our campuses and in our communities.
As we prepare for this adventure, throughout our time at Brown and even after we return we’ll be sharing our experiences and our thoughts through this blog. We hope you can join us and share what we’re going through and learning. Your thoughts and comments will always be welcome and we invite you to add to this blog.

ReplyDeleteHave you all heard something about your fellow Brownies that made you all think that the others were to be feared in some way? I’m reading from way too many of you about the fear and trepidation you all felt about meeting each other.
I hope the rest of the ILC cohorts all read this because I’m only going to write it out this once: When each of you applied to be members of the ILC we did a check on you for gang affiliations and had a psychological profile performed on all of you to see if any of you had homicidal tendencies.
Trust me when I tell you that you all checked out and aside from many of you just being shy around other people, you all have what it takes to become normal members of society. We found that Irene belongs to some sort of ice skating gang and a few others of you belong to some group called the SATs but these seemed to be rather benign “social clubs” rather than the hard core street gangs we see here in Richmond.
I think maybe this is all a result of the age we live in wherein we email, Facebook, text or twitter each other instead of actually talking face to face. I know that all of you young folks are surgically linked to your cell phones but talking over the phone isn’t the same as a face2face conversation.
